Treetop’s Science class is project-based and hands-on with opportunities for students to explore, theorize, and apply the principles using the scientific method. Weekly projects will draw from many branches of science including chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy, anatomy, etc. Occasionally Treetop will focus on a single theme, such as our solid-fueled powered rockets or CO 2 rocket cars. Whatever the curriculum, Treetop Academics believes in offering science classes for elementary students that are academically challenging, thought provoking, unique and fun.
In this Art class, students will create their own art projects, study the artwork of others, and be encouraged to share their ideas about Art. Students will learn about artists from other time periods/cultures, including modern and contemporary, with some weekly lessons drawn from their work. Weekly Art projects involve both a wide array of mediums and subject matter. This class will focus primarily on creativity more than ability, with tolerance and understanding different points of view as necessary building blocks for artistry and inclusiveness. Through their artwork, Treetop encourages a student/artist to create from the heart and imagination and explore their individual voice.
Treetop is excited to partner with the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS casls.uoregon.edu) to implement the I-Agents 21st Century Global Competence Program. Each Wednesday, students will have the opportunity to participate in an inquiry-based, game play curriculum to promote foundational language learning and intercultural communication. Students will take on the role of a secret agent charged with solving mysteries from around the world. Each Wednesday, learners will play in order to:
Access key skills needed for multilingualism
Develop key 21 st century skills
Build the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes learners need to negotiate intercultural situations successfully
Build patterning and problem-solving skills
Increase critical thinking abilities and tolerance to ambiguity
Introduce learners to over 15 languages from around the world
Treetop is excited to be one of three implementation sites around the country for this groundbreaking curriculum, with experts in language teaching and learning leading classes each week.
About CASLS
The Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon is one of sixteen National Foreign Language Resource Centers that work to increase the nation’s capacity for language education. CASLS supports innovative world language teaching and learning by developing research-based curricula, professional development resources, and assessments to support Here.
Treetop Academics is happy to continue our multi-disciplinary class in robotics, programming, electronics, and computer science! This class will introduce the fundamentals in circuitry, electronics, programming, and integrating these concepts with Robotics and hands-on applications. Students will be given differentiated challenges, tasks, and opportunities to increase their own individual abilities while working with others in groups. 4/5th grade students will be working directly with robots and use skills in programming and engineering. The aim of this class is to offer opportunities for each student based on the student’s prior knowledge and provide and ongoing experience/education that will build a foundation in these areas. In this comprehensive class students will be using computers, programs, wires, circuits, etc. in building individual projects and working as part of teams throughout the year.
Treetop’s Publishing class is home to the Edison student-run newspaper, The Edison Examiner. This is not the only way to contribute to the Examiner, but students in this class are the writers, editors, and the creative force behind every part of this ongoing publication. As a team, students will interview, write, cover stories, edit, submit original work, and be a part of the decision-making processes associated with this ‘fit to print’ newspaper. Outside (at home) writing work is encouraged depending on the scope of the article, required research, and the interest of the student. This is an Edison Community Newspaper that is not limited to just the happenings of Edison, but a platform for students to think, investigate, write about, and communicate their interests to add value to their community through thoughtful journalism. This is an exciting, faster-paced ‘newsroom’ opportunity for students who love would like to be a part of the ongoing creative process associated with running a school newspaper. You can check out the prior editions on our website Here.
A student favorite, Treetop’s Maker-Space class is an open-ended platform for students to create, design, and build their own ideas in a guided and inclusive environment. Students can intersect Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, Writing or any other subject to help accomplish their own creative ideas, which may include a continuation of their Robotics/Programming projects or something completely new and unrelated! This is an opportunity for students to test their ambitions and theories about what they would like to see in the world.
The Mini Maker-Space is a place where we hope students will be inspired to engage with others to solve challenges, collaborate, create new things, use their imagination, or learn at their own pace to accomplish a task they find important. This is a hands-on class, with Treetop facilitating in design, feasibility, tool use, and overall construction of all student projects. Expect to take home wacky creations each week! Come build something cool!
Extended Care
Extended-care begins at 4:15pm M/T/W/TH and Fridays at 3pm, (after our academic classes) and directly after school on days when Treetop Academics’ regular classes are not in session. This allows us to provide programs until 6pm, all days when school is in session, from the 1st day of school until the last. For the 2022/23 school year, all students are enrolled in M-F childcare with academic classes included in the cost of tuition.
Extended-care is similar to what may be considered traditional childcare, but with the Treetop philosophy and exploratory opportunities associated with our unique program. During this time, students will work on other projects, engage in free- play, outside-play, work on homework, or hang out with friends, play games, or read books.
Treetop offers several different price points that correlate with daily pick-up time. When registering with Treetop using the ‘Intake form’ by clicking the ‘Register Now’ button, please indicate the latest time your student will be picked up. This is also the same form you can sign-up for the no-school day ‘Hackathons’. By submitting the Intake Form, and continuing with the application process, all students who attend Treetop are automatically signed up for both all academic classes and extended-care.
